Our members

Since its inception in 1990, the GSI has grown from a small motley group of less than 50 to over 1500+ members and includes glaucoma specialists, fellowship trained glaucoma specialists, fellows in glaucoma training and general ophthalmologists. The minimum requirement is a six month fellowship in glaucoma after postgraduation.

What We Do

Members of the society endeavour to provide comprehensive glaucoma care to patients customised to their social environment, incorporating realistic aspects of the latest practical developments in glaucoma. Members share knowledge gleaned by the uniqueness of their practice milieu and experience, to prevent blindness. All kind of members mentioned below are entitled to participate in the scientific activities of the society by paying concessional fee and to receive complimentary soft copies of its publications/ newsletters.

The Membership of the Society is of four types.

Life membership

  • New Members from 15/09/17

    All Medical practitioners of modern medicine registered with any state Medical Council (recognized by the Indian Medical Council) who practice ophthalmology with post graduate qualification / Diploma qualification in Ophthalmology and having special interest in the field of Glaucoma shall be eligible for becoming life members of the society w.e.f. 15/09/2017.

    Special interest here means doing minimum six months fellowship in Glaucoma /Senior Residency / DNB Glaucoma or any other similar program in the field of Glaucoma. Although, a minimum of six months fellowship is required, this kind of membership is granted only on submission of completion of fellowship.

  • Existing Life Members Approved up to 14/09/2017

    Qualified Ophthalmologists with Allopathic qualification practicing or working and living in India, whose membership is approved up to 14/09/2017. 

    Ophthalmologists recognized under Schedule I or III of the Indian Medical Council of 1956 and interested in the Science and Art of Ophthalmology are existing life members of the society. 

Associate members

Qualified ophthalmologists not fulfilling criteria for life membership, wanting to be members with a self declared interest in Glaucoma, can apply for associate membership of the society. This membership is also for life time and a onetime admission fees is payable which is the same for life membership. The only difference between life member and associate member is that associate member does not have voting rights, and will not be eligible to hold any post in executive body of society or attend any general body meeting. He/ she cannot propose or second membership or election nomination application.

Any associate member on getting the desired qualification may apply to the society with necessary supporting papers for converting associate membership into life membership.  No additional fees will be payable for conversion of membership.  Life membership of such members will be effective from the date of approval of ratification by the GBM.

International Membership

a) Qualified ophthalmologists having non Indian Passport, wanting to be members with a self declared interest in Glaucoma, can apply for International membership of the society. They will also need to be proposed and seconded by GSI members and be ratified in AGM. This membership is also for life time and a onetime admission fees is payable which is the same for life membership for SAARC countries and US dollars 500/- (exclusive of taxes if any) for other countries. International member does not have voting rights, and will not be eligible to attend general body meeting or to hold any post in executive body of society. He/ she cannot propose or second membership or election nomination application.

b) Whenever, an Indian Passport holder acquires a foreign passport, his/ her will change to International member.

c) They can present paper/ poster/ video for work done in India but are not be eligible for any awards.

Admission of membership :

Application for membership shall be submitted to the Secretary on a prescribed form available here.It should be duly proposed by one life member and seconded by another life member of the society who has a personal knowledge of the applicant. All applications would be considered by the executive committee and the suitable applicant shall be admitted as a member, on payment of the prescribed fees, which are non-refundable under any circumstances. Any willful submission of a wrong statement or fake document to get membership may lead to immediate removal from membership without assigning any further reason at any time. The terms of membership are written in detail in the membership form (annexure II). If any life membership is granted with insufficient or inappropriate documentary submission, inadvertently or by oversight, then the secretariat has the right to ask such a member to submit the remaining documents. If he/ she fails to do so, the President, with approval of executive committee, can consider conversion of such a life member to associate member, upto five years of his/ her ratification.
